Get the positioning right
before you design the brand

Brand strategy services for UK businesses, mostly smaller SMEs: positioning and messaging workshops from a Nottingham studio that also designs the identities and websites your strategy feeds into. We scope to the decision you need, a focused session or a fuller positioning project ahead of a rebrand.

  • Positioning clarity

Who you serve, what you stand for and how you differ, in plain language your whole team can repeat.

  • Messaging pillars

Themes copy and design reuse across web, print and sales, so the story stops being reinvented each time.

  • Audience clarity

Who the brand is really for, and, just as usefully, who it isn't, so the work speaks to someone specific.

  • A design-ready brief

Outputs a designer can execute against, including us, when identity or web follows in the same studio.

When it's worth it

When the story stops matching the business

Most positioning workshops start from one of three states. A reposition, the offer has moved on but the website, sales deck and hiring still describe an older version of the business. A new venture that wants the story agreed before commissioning a logo or website, so creative work starts from a brief, not a mood board and a hope. Or a team stuck sounding like every competitor, where the category language has blurred into the same claims and the same vague differentiators.

You do not always need a full workshop programme. Often light discovery is enough to unblock a brand identity, and we'll say so rather than sell depth you won't use. Not sure whether it's a reset or a tidy-up? Our guide on rebrand or simply refresh walks through the difference, and why branding matters makes the commercial case.

Fifth Element Systems positioning and brand strategy work by Berlew Design Studio.

Why not just a deck?

Strategy that ships, not strategy that sits in a drawer

A big consultancy can hand you a polished deck. Skipping strategy can feel faster. Here's what changes when the positioning is done inside the same studio that then designs the identity and builds the site.

Strategy lands as slides a separate designer has to interpret
The same studio designs the identity and website afterwards
Account layers and junior consultants between you and the thinking
You work directly with the person doing the thinking
A full programme sold whether or not your brief needs it
We say when light discovery is enough for the decision at hand
Abstract brand pillars with no route into the visuals
Positioning written so a designer can brief straight from it
A handoff gap where meaning leaks between suppliers
Strategy carries straight through to identity, logo and web under one roof
Positioning that's admired once, then quietly ignored
Documented plainly so the team actually keeps using it

Brand strategy FAQs

The questions we hear most before a strategy engagement starts.

What are brand strategy services?

Brand strategy services help you decide who you are for, what you stand for and how you differ before design or marketing ramps up. At Berlew that usually means facilitated positioning workshops and documented messaging direction, scoped to the decision you need rather than a slide deck that sits unused.

Do I need brand strategy before a logo or identity project?

Not always, light discovery is often enough, and we'll say so. A full workshop earns its place when the positioning is genuinely unclear, your market has shifted, or several stakeholders need aligning before design starts.

How much does brand strategy cost?

Quoted per engagement, based on workshop depth and deliverables. We confirm scope and a fixed price before any work starts, see the scope comparison above for what typically differs between a focused workshop and a fuller positioning project.

What deliverables will I actually receive?

Typically a positioning statement, audience notes and messaging direction, documented for your team to use and for a designer to work from. Fuller projects include a written strategy pack; a focused workshop leaves you with structured notes from the session.

What do I need to prepare for a workshop?

Any existing brand materials, market research or competitor examples you already have, plus the right decision-makers in the room. We send a short brief beforehand so nobody arrives cold.

Can you run the workshop remotely?

Yes. We run sessions with UK clients online or in person when it's practical, a remote workshop covers exactly the same ground.

Will you design the identity and website afterwards?

Usually, yes, that's the point of doing it here. Brand identity and web design follow with the positioning already agreed, so nothing gets redesigned later. Strategy-only is fine too if you already have a designer.
