Finish & feel

The finish is the first thing they feel

On a card, the paper and finish do as much work as the layout. We design for the finish from the start and build the spec layers your printer needs, so the effect lands on press, not just on screen.

  • Finley Gomm Fitness business cards with wordmark. Berlew brand identity.
  • Foil, emboss & spot UV

The premium moves, metallic foil, blind emboss and raised spot-UV gloss. We set the finish layers so the effect hits one hero detail, usually the logo, rather than shouting across the whole card.

  • 85×55mm

Standard UK card, or a bespoke size

  • Soft-touch & lamination

Matte, gloss or a velvet soft-touch laminate, tactile contrast that reads as considered rather than loud.

  • Multi-layer stocks

Layered stocks with a coloured core when the brand calls for weight in the hand. Scoped to budget, never defaulted to.

  • Print-ready spec files

Press-ready CMYK PDF with 3mm bleed, safe margins and embedded fonts, plus the spot-UV mask or foil layer your printer needs to quote first time.

Business card sizes & layout

UK business card sizes and layout, scoped to how you hand them over

Every business card layout starts from the UK sizes printers quote against. Standard is the safe choice for wallet cards; square, slim, folded and die-cut formats are there when the brand can carry them.

Card format Size
  • Standard

Classic UK business card layout that fits wallets and cardholders without trimming

  • Square

Modern square layout when the brand can carry a distinctive footprint

  • Slim

Slimline layout that reads premium in the hand at networking events

  • Folded

Folded business card layout with room for services, a map or an appointment reminder on the inside

  • Custom die-cut

Bespoke card shape for a layout that has to stand out on a desk

Who it suits

Cards for people who still hand one over

Most of our card clients fall into three camps. New businesses launching with stationery that matches their logo and website from day one, not a rushed order the week before an event. Rebrands refresh cards alongside a wider brand identity project so everything lands together. Premium positioning teams want foil, emboss or a heavier stock considered as part of the design, not bolted on at the printer.

We are Nottingham business card designers working UK-wide on logo and business card design when the mark and the card need to land together. If you are ordering cards before you have a logo in place, logo design is the place to start. The card is only as strong as the logo it carries. Need more than cards? Brief to print-ready

How we design your business cards

A tight, four-stage process, often a week or two once brand assets and details are confirmed.

We confirm what goes on front and back, single or double-sided, the card size, and any finish or stock you're leaning towards.

Why not an online builder?

A template gets you a card. A studio gets you a brand asset.

An online builder or a printer's free design tool gets you a card fast. Here's what changes when a studio designs it, and why cheap cards often get reprinted.

Berlew studio
Online builder / DIY
Logo at the right resolution Vector artwork sized and spaced properly, every time
Type matched to your brand Chosen to sit with your identity, not the template default
Finish set up for press Foil, spot-UV and emboss layers built into the artwork
Files any UK printer accepts Bleed, safe margins and embedded fonts, checked before send
Matches your wider brand The same studio behind your logo, identity and website
A designer you can talk to Direct studio contact, not a support queue

Beyond the card

The card is one piece of a bigger system

Cards look their best when the logo, identity and website they sit beside come from the same studio. Pick up any of these alongside your card project, or start at the hub if you're still deciding.

Two hands hold business cards against a light blue background. The card on the left features a dark blue rectangle with a white border, bearing the text "Butterfly Flyaway Photography" in white. The card on the right is dark blue with white

Business card design FAQs

The questions we hear most before a card project starts.

How much does business card design cost?

Design starts from £180 for a double-sided card. Special finishes, bespoke shapes and matching stationery are quoted on top once we know the brief. We confirm a fixed price before work starts, no per-card design charge or checkout upsells.

What size are business cards in the UK?

The UK standard is 85×55mm, the same footprint as a credit card, so it fits every wallet and holder. We also design square (65×65mm), slim (85×40mm), folded and custom die-cut cards when the brand and budget support it.

What finishes can you design for?

Matte and gloss lamination, soft-touch, spot UV, metallic foil, emboss and deboss, plus multi-layer stocks. We build the spec layers your printer needs and advise on which finish is genuinely worth it for your brand.

Can you work from a design I already have?

Yes. We can overhaul an existing card so it meets print specs, bleed, safe zones and CMYK colour, or redesign it properly if it was built in a template that will not hold up on press.

Can you design double-sided cards?

Yes. The reverse is useful for services, a tagline, a QR link or a bold brand moment, we scope it to how you actually hand the card over.

What file format will my printer need?

Typically a press-ready PDF in CMYK with 3mm bleed and embedded fonts, plus any finish layers such as a spot-UV mask or foil plate. We confirm specs with your supplier before final export.

Do you print the cards as well?

We focus on design and supply print-ready files. We can recommend trusted UK print partners or set the files up to your own printer's spec, and for non-standard shapes we point you to a printer equipped to handle them.

Can card updates go on subscription?

Yes. Teams with regular staff changes or role updates use our unlimited graphic design subscription for quick turnaround on new versions once the template exists.
